Part families

A family groups parts of the catalog (“Braking”, “Oils”, “Tires”…) and gives them default values: the VAT, the unit, the stock tracking and the price rule (rule, coefficient and rounding). Families are managed in the Families tab of the Catalog.

A part always keeps its own values: the family does not impose them live. They are copied into the sheet when you create a part of the family, then only when you ask. Changing a family therefore never changes an existing price, VAT or quote line without your agreement.

For each family the table shows its name, its VAT, its unit, the stock tracking, its price rule, the number of parts attached to it, and the Archived badge where relevant. A part has at most one family; a part without a family remains possible. A new garage starts with no family; a garage that already had parts before families existed sees them filed in a family named Pièces détachées (French for “spare parts”), which you can rename.

Click New family (or Edit on a row): give a name (unique within the garage, ignoring capitals), then choose the VAT among the garage’s rates, the unit, the stock tracking and the price rule. Families have no purchase price: the “purchase price × coefficient” rule will give each part its sale price, based on its own purchase price.

An archived family is no longer offered when creating a part or in the suppliers’ mappings, but its parts keep it. Archive or Reactivate from the row. Delete is only possible for a family with no part and no supplier mapping; otherwise archive it.

When you save a family that has parts and some values have changed, Garage+ offers Also apply to the N parts, with one box per changed value (VAT, unit, stock tracking, price rule). Tick what should be copied, then click the button; Not now leaves the parts as they are.

The result states, per value, how many parts changed, and names the parts that were refused with the reason: a part that has already been used (stock, work order, quote, invoice, order, stock count or fixed-price service) keeps its unit, and a part whose stock is not zero stays tracked in stock. The other parts are modified. The sale price of a part whose price rule changes is recalculated, with a trace in its price history.

From the parts list, the Family… action likewise applies a family to a selection of parts (see Selection and bulk actions).

In a supplier’s category mapping, the optional Family field files the parts created from an item of that category in this family. Do not confuse it with the “family” of a supplier catalog such as Bihr’s, which is a category of that catalog.
